The Truescreen Faecal Immunochemical Test is a simple at home bowel cancer screening test designed to detect microscopic traces of human blood in stool. This can be an early indicator of bowel cancer, often before symptoms develop. Unlike older guaiac based FOB tests still sold in some pharmacies, this test uses modern FIT technology with higher clinical accuracy.

  • The world’s modern standard for bowel cancer screening. Uses the same clinically validated FIT technology as the New Zealand National Bowel Screening Programme, with an optimised threshold for enhanced early detection.
  • Clinically proven FIT technology is more accurate and reliable than outdated FOB tests commonly sold in NZ pharmacies. Do not take chances with your health. Choose Truescreen’s laboratory processed FIT screening for modern bowel cancer detection.
  • Can detect bowel cancer before symptoms develop.

  • Test results are provided for informational purposes only. They may help guide your understanding of your health but do not constitute a clinical diagnosis.
  • While we work exclusively with accredited laboratories and validated point of care technologies or manufacturers, no laboratory test, point of care test, or any medical test is perfect. Test results may occasionally be inaccurate or inconclusive, and you must always bear that in mind in any future decision making.
  • Screening tests can produce false negative results, where a condition is present but not detected, as well as false positive results, where a test is abnormal despite no underlying condition being identified on further investigation.
  • Screening tests are not 100% accurate. False positive and false negative results can occur. A normal result does not guarantee the absence of disease; an abnormal result does not confirm the presence of disease.
  • Results are highly dependent on correct use according to instructions.

Bowel cancer doesn't wait until you're 58.

New Zealand's National Bowel Screening Programme starts at 58. But bowel cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in New Zealanders under 50 — and rates in younger adults are rising.

When caught early, survival rates are around 90%. Caught late, that drops to 14%.

The screening gap is real. Truescreen closes it.

What Is the FIT Test?

A Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) detects hidden traces of blood in your stool — one of the earliest signs of bowel cancer, often before any symptoms appear.

It's the same technology used in New Zealand's national programme and recommended by bowel cancer screening bodies worldwide. No diet restrictions, no GP referral, no clinic visit required.

Step-By-Step Video Instructions

Step-by-step guide

Everything you need to know about what to do once your test arrives from how to do it to what happens next.

This test is for you if...

  • You're aged 40–57 and not yet eligible for the national programme
  • You want to screen earlier, without waiting for symptoms
  • Bowel cancer runs in your family
  • You want peace of mind backed by a real clinical result

If you're 58 or over, you may be eligible for the free national programme. We still recommend annual screening — speak to your GP.

Truescreen FIT Test vs. Pharmacy FOB Test

The FOB (Fecal Occult Blood) tests you can find in the pharmacies advertise a similar utility, but they are NOT the same thing. They use an older guaiac-based method the detects blood chemically. What does this mean? Frequent false positives, not taken seriously by GP community, and more difficult / messy to do. In short, not worth doing.

What You Get

This is everything included in your bowel cancer screening FIT Test. Everything you need to easily collect and send off your sample for lab analysis.

  • Sample Test Tube
  • Stool Catcher
  • Specimen Bag
  • Latex Gloves
  • Hard copy of instructions
  • Prepaid envelope to send sample to the lab

Understanding your results

Once we receive your results, depending on what they are, you will be notified in the following way with the following information.

If your test result is negative, you'll receive an email from Dr. Price with that result as well as an explanation of what that means: That it is "unlikely there is a significant bleeding colorectal cancer present at the time of screening". Annual proactive screening will be recommended as well as continued monitoring of potential warning signs or symptoms.

In the instance of a positive result, first and foremost, it is important to understand this is not a diagnosis. It is simply a screening result that suggests further investigation may be warranted. Dr. Price will get in touch and provide recommendations on what to do next including how to speak to your GP. He also provides a letter outlining the findings and what they mean.

Testimonials

I thought it was great that I could get this test without needing to make an appointment or get a referral. I just ordered it an it arrived 2 days later, then I had an email with my results a few days after that.

The fact that the results were reviewed by a doctor that could then guide me through what to do next was very re-assuring. The communication was fast and excellent.

I was a little worried about actually doing the test at home but it was actually really easy and I got my test result email in a few days.

My family tries to be good on proactive health stuff and a friend saw an Instagram post about this, so I did it and I'm going to make it a yearly thing. So easy.

FAQs

Use this text to answer questions in as much detail as possible for your customers.

Yes. TrueScreen uses the same FIT technology trusted by New Zealand's National Bowel Screening Programme — analysed at the same certified laboratories.

The FIT test detects blood in stool that is invisible to the naked eye. It is more accurate than older guaiac (FOB) pharmacy tests, which require dietary restrictions and detect blood less specifically. Annual FIT testing is associated with a 32–33% reduction in bowel cancer mortality.

A positive result means blood was detected — not that you have cancer. It means further investigation is recommended. Your results include doctor-written next steps, typically a GP referral for colonoscopy. Our doctor is available to answer questions.

Annually. Consistent yearly screening is what builds your protection over time — a single test is a snapshot, not a guarantee.

Your sample is collected privately at home, returned via freepost, and processed at a certified NZ laboratory. Your results are reviewed by our doctor before being sent to you. Your information is never shared without your consent.

If you are currently experiencing symptoms — such as rectal bleeding, unexplained changes in bowel habit, or abdominal pain for extended periods of time — you should see your GP rather than ordering a screening test. Truescreen is a screening tool for people with no or "low risk" current symptoms.

Yes. If you're eligible for the national programme, we encourage you to use it. TrueScreen is available to anyone who wants to screen independently — whether for convenience, timing, or annual retesting between national programme rounds.

The kit contains your CE-certified FIT collection device, step-by-step instructions, and a freepost return envelope. Everything you need is included.
