The menopause and perimenopause is natural stage of life that occurs in woman as they get older, it happens when the ovaries gradually stop producing the hormone oestrogen. Despite being a natural stage of life it can present unpleasant symptoms such as:

  • Changes in periods / Eventually periods completely stopping
  • Night sweats
  • Mood changes / Fatigue / Anxiety
  • Low libido / vaginal dryness
  • Skin changes / hair loss

Why FSH levels rise during menopause

As oestrogen production declines, the body attempts to compensate. The pituitary gland releases increasing amounts of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) in an effort to stimulate the ovaries to produce more oestrogen.

As the ovaries become less responsive, FSH levels remain elevated. For this reason, raised FSH levels are one of the biochemical markers associated with perimenopause and menopause.

FSH testing cannot diagnose menopause on its own, but when interpreted alongside symptoms and menstrual history, it can provide useful insight into hormonal changes occurring during this transition, our FSH test contains useful information designed by doctors to aid your insight into your hormones.

Test results may occasionally be inaccurate or inconclusive, and you must always bear that in mind in any future decision making.
  • Screening tests can produce false negative results, where a condition is present but not detected, as well as false positive results, where a test is abnormal despite no underlying condition being identified on further investigation.
  • Screening tests are not 100% accurate. False positive and false negative results can occur. A normal result does not guarantee the absence of disease; an abnormal result does not confirm the presence of disease.
  • Results are highly dependent on correct use according to instructions.
